About the Role:
The Senior Legal Editor is responsible for the quality, utility and currency of the content across a number of publications within an allocated portfolio. The core function of the Senior Legal Editor is to manage the day-to-day publication process for their portfolio, achieved by a combination of working with external stakeholders to secure and deliver updates, and also carrying out editorial work on their content to prepare it for publication. The role also includes key aspects of commercial/market awareness, budget management, and content development/enhancement.
The Senior Legal Editor serves as the subject matter expert for the areas of law/legal jurisdictions covered by their portfolio. As subject matter expert, they liaise with customers and customer-facing teams to respond to queries, assess and implement feedback, and articulate the value propositions of their publications.
The role is differentiated from the Legal Editor role by the expansion of responsibilities to take on aspects of leadership, training, autonomy, initiative and representation on behalf of the team. The Senior Legal Editor is expected to fulfill all of the core aspects of the Legal Editor role to a high standard that sets an example for the Legal Editors. The Senior role also involves specialisation in one or more of the core aspects of the Legal Editor role to the extent that they serve as leaders amongst their peers and can train team members and external stakeholders on these competencies where required.
This is a permanent full-time role open to applicants from South Australia, with primarily home-based arrangements available for the right candidate.
Responsibilities
• Edit manuscript according to house style to ensure accuracy, currency, relevance and consistency, supported by legal research as required
• Deep understanding of end-to-end editorial processes and ability to coordinate with offshore editorial teams to ensure efficient content updating processes and outcomes
• Understanding of content XML infrastructures and systems architecture (including but not limited to ECJ, basic XML mark-up and troubleshooting) and rules to support clean and effective mark-up of content and support content enrichment for future developments and utilisation of content
• Project manage titles to adhere to publishing schedule for all formats; implement agreed plans for product enhancements and work within set commercial parameters
• Awareness of practice area developments, legislative reforms and bills, procedures, case law and trends impacting portfolio, to be translated into content updates via collaboration with external authors
• Understand and analyse developments and changes in law and cases to inform wider teams, and act as publication champion to drive awareness and promotion
• Knowledge of key customer segments including personas, behaviours, usage and expectations in order to develop and maintain content in line with customer needs
• Responsible for maintaining awareness of competitive landscape and driving content improvements to maintain competitive edge
• Strong commercial awareness and acumen, including ability to identify and assess opportunities for commercial growth and new revenue
• Ability and initiative to translate advanced knowledge of subject matter, customers and market into content enhancements and increased value for stakeholders
• Accountable for operating within costs budget set across portfolio of publications
• Responsible for providing information to inform monthly reporting, reforecasting and annual budget-setting
• Ability to identify cost-saving measures within publication budgets in line with local, regional and global targets
• Identify opportunities for investment of budget and articulate value proposition for budget increase including return on investment analysis and commercial viability
• Full management of all author, supplier, alliance and partnership relationships assigned to allocated portfolio, including:
• Author commissioning/decommissioning
• Contract negotiations and documentation according to compliance policies
• Author performance management
• Author training and support
• Succession planning
• Management of author payments
• Ongoing collaboration with editorial offshore teams to ensure efficient processing and collaboration to update content
• Manage and respond to external portfolio-related queries to ensure customer satisfaction
• Engage with external customer markets to obtain feedback and insights
• Ability to guide, train and support team members and new starters
• Specialisation in at least one core aspect of the Legal Editor role enabling increased ownership and responsibility
Requirements
• Law degree or demonstrated legal practice area knowledge
• Sound level of computer literacy
• High level of legal research skills
• Computer skills in Microsoft Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint
• Superior reading and legal comprehension skills
• Excellent communication, organisation and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated project management skills
• Excellent relationship-building and networking skills
• Strong commercial awareness
• 1-2 years’ experience in the Legal Editor role or equivalent experience in legal or publishing industries
